R. M. Allen, 2022 Abstract Given the high level of compliance with official narratives advocated by the state and the mainstream media, it is worth analysing the psychological basis for such beliefs. There are several reasons why people may be psychologically prone to believing in these complicity theories. These fall under the categories of economic motivations, a desire to avoid cognitive dissonance, and high levels of mainstream media consumption.
Interesting to note that the Complicity Theorists who became born-again Conspiracy Theorists viz-a-viz Russiagate, instantly reverted to form when it was suggested that the US Deep State and Team D engineered the rigging of the 2020 US election in favour of Sleep Joe. No way! Impossible! Fairest election evah!!
Great analysis but I’d add one thing. The highly educated fear being lumped in with a demographic which they perceive to be gullible and/or working class. They don’t look at a fact pattern and assess it based on its probability. They look to the opinions of ‘smart’ people not stopping to consider that those people (in journalism or government) are compensated for their opinions. They engage in a sort of circular affirmation of intelligence whereby they’re wise b/c they are in agreement with those society has rewarded for their wisdom.
