I don’t think we can in fact “use an unemployment rate as a reasonable proxy” nor do I think any of the other historical analogies you attempt to draw are tenable because the nature of unemployment, the nature of work, and the nature of what it looks like and what is required to successfully function in society have all changed so dramatically (both systemically and individually) between the long past historical time periods you are referencing in comparison with our modern day. Those differences must be grappled with if we ever want to develop an accurate understanding of how autism has presented throughout human history, and especially if we want to reach an accurate holistic description of the actual developmental mechanics across the spectrum.
